• Is a Lagotto right for me (us)?
  A Lagotto is a very energetic dog that requires exercise to stay mentally and physically healthy. They are well suited for active families. Many Lagotti love the water, many love active games like fetch or hide and seek. They are relatively low-maintenance for a coated breed. They have hair instead of fur, therefore, are low-shedding and sometimes acceptable for folks with allergies.
• Where do I find a puppy?
  This breed is still very rare in North America. There are occasional litters available in the US. Many of us have imported dogs from overseas. It can be a bit more complicated than purchasing a puppy from a breeder in the US, it is possible to get a good puppy from reputable breeders elsewhere. Each country has its own regulations for exporting dogs. Please see the web page listing club members who are breeders.
• What does the United States require for importing a dog?

• How do I know if a breeder is reputable?
  Please read our Code of Ethics. Our breeders agree to abide by this Code. A reputable breeder will put the welfare of their dogs above all else.
• What questions should I ask a breeder?
  Whether overseas or in the US, you should always expect the breeder to health test their breeding stock regularly. Hips should be rated with OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) in the US after age 2 or with a preliminary before that age. Penn Hip is another rating system for dogs under age 2. Ask the breeder about eye testing. In the US we use CERF (Canine Eye Registry Foundation).
• Are there many rescue dogs available?
  No, not at this time, but we will take applications in the event rescues becomes available.
• How do I groom my Lagotto?
  A Lagotto has hair that needs to be trimmed on a regular basis. If kept at about 1 to 1.5" of length, it can be maintained with periodic combing and bathing. The hair on the head is kept slightly longer than the body and the tail is trimmed like a carrot. The hair is trimmed to expose the eyes and is trimmed around the edges of the ear leather.
• Are they easy to train?
  Lagotti are a very intelligent breed of dog. With praise and treats, they can be trained to be very nice companions.
